Phlox Blushing Bride

Phlox 'Blushing Bride' Seeds

If you want a flower that whispers rather than shouts, 'Blushing Bride' is the perfect choice. This exquisite annual Phlox produces masses of large, white, star-shaped flowers, each centred with a delicate, cherry-pink "blush" eye.

It grows as a neat, bushy mound (up to 40cm), making it ideal for the front of a border or filling terracotta pots with spilling colour. It has a subtle, sweet fragrance and long, wiry stems that make it a fantastic cut flower for small posies, buttonholes, and jam-jar arrangements.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Phlox drummondii 'Blushing Bride' is a Hardy Annual (H3). Unlike the tall perennial Phlox often found in borders, this annual variety is bred for a compact habit and a massive quantity of blooms over a single summer season.

Award Winning: This variety is a Fleuroselect Winner, meaning it has been internationally recognised for its beauty, uniformity, and outstanding performance in garden trials. It is specifically noted for its "cut-and-come-again" nature—the more you harvest for posies, the more the plant will bloom.

Subtle Scent: While the fragrance is delicate, 'Blushing Bride' carries a sweet, honey-like scent that becomes more pronounced in the warmth of a sunny UK afternoon.

🌱 Growing Guide

Annual Phlox is a "dark germinator," meaning the seeds must be completely shielded from light to start growing.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to May. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover the seeds completely with a layer of soil or vermiculite. To be safe, place a piece of cardboard over the seed tray until they sprout. Keep at 18-20°C. Seeds usually germinate within 10-21 days.

Where to Plant:
Plant out in May or June once the threat of frost has passed. They thrive in full sun but appreciate soil that retains some moisture. If the UK summer becomes particularly hot and dry, ensure they are watered regularly, especially if growing in containers.

Ongoing Care:
When the seedlings reach about 10cm tall, pinch out the growing tip to encourage a bushier plant. Regular deadheading of faded clusters will keep the plant producing fresh white and pink stars right up until the first autumn frosts.
